Directions

You PROBABLY want to fly into Mexico City. The Airport code is MEX.

Once you land, get through customs, and arrive at the luggage carousel it’ll be about time to start thinking about how to get from the airport to your hotel/AirB&B. Note if you need to use the bathroom after your flight I would wait until AFTER getting though customs - The customs line can get pretty long so getting a spot and getting though may be worth it. Once you are through customs and enter the baggage claim area there are restrooms at the far end of the hall - directly opposite from where you entered the hall.

If you want to change some money before leaving the airport there is a currency exchange kiosk right near the baggage claim. Down in the city you can also generally use any local atm (for a small fee) and pull out money in pesos. Just make sure you let your bank know you are traveling so they don’t freeze your card!

Once you have collected your bags you can leave the airport! The exit doors are pretty clearly marked and just to the right of the currency exchange kiosk in the baggage claim area.

We recommend getting to your Hotel/AirB&B one of two ways:

Uber

Download Uber (NOT LYFT) before leaving the US and get your account set up. Depending on your cell service plan it is likely you will be able to use your phone as normal. Uber is really cheap and will get your around town quickly. There is an Uber pick up spot just through the baggage claim doors and to the right.

Taxi

If you don’t plan to use your phone service in Mexico City you can still easily get around! As soon as you leave the baggage claim area, turn to your right. There is a prepaid taxi service. It might be a little more expensive than Uber but it’s really not bad either! You will be able to give the attendant your Hotel/AirB&B address and pre-pay for the ride. The attendant will give you a receipt to take out to the taxi driver. They have specific taxis for this so don’t just go hop in any taxi! Ask where their taxis are and they’ll direct you! It is super easy!

I suggest having a screenshot of your address and/or map marked with the location of your destination just in case your driver asks for reference!

If you are looking for a place to stay we recommend these locations and neighborhoods!

Staying in any of these areas will put you close to the action!

Air B&B

Check out a few of the links below to see some AIRB&B locations that we’d recommend. If you prefer to do your own search just make sure your house is in the “La Condesa” OR “Roma NTE” OR “Hipodromo” neighborhoods. That will put you close to the action and in a beautiful neighborhood!

Seriously though - Check out these BEAUTIFUL homes, then look at the price - then do a happy dance!

Hotels

If you are looking for a hotel as home base for the weekend, we have a couple of recommendations! Now, the hotels are a little further away but not by much. Michael and I have walked, biked, and used Ubers to get from these hotels to the wedding venue/the AIR B&B locations. So while these are just little further away it is still absolutely doable!

Plus these hotels are downtown and right in the middle of some great sights! You’ll be able to easily check out Zocalo, The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Templo Mayor de México-Tenochtitlan!!

Here are some good options:

1: Gran Hotel - https://bit.ly/2LKsLAQ

2: Hampton Inn - https://bit.ly/2UhNAnA

3: Best Western (look at it!) - https://bit.ly/2sMQLIv

4: Sheraton - https://bit.ly/2MUCZef

We have put in hours and hours AND HOURS of backbreaking on-the-ground research just so that we could make some good recommendations of where YOU can get the best drinks (and food and and sights…I guess). Though to be clear, if you show up with no plans (other than the wedding of course) you won’t be able to help finding delicious things to eat, drink, and beautiful things to see.

This city is amazing.

Breakfast

OMG. You know Joey loves a beignet from Cafe Du Monde. It will be no surprise that he loves El Moro for breakfast - JUST LOOK AT THOSE CHURROS!
El Moro

If you are looking for more than just sugar for breakfast (Joey judges you) then Lardo may just right - check out their fruits and egg entrees for a nice breakfast brunch vibe! Lardo

Lunch

If you are looking for lunch options with a TON of variety look no further than La Case De Tono. There are several all over the city but the one we recommend is the Plaza Juarez location - it’s close to the hotels downtown! La Casa De Tona

OH! You wanted TACOS?!? Hit up this amazing taco place for some delicious food and get back to sightseeing fast! El Tizoncito

Dinner

We found this restaurant on our first trip to Mexico City while just walking around the city holding hands and being romantic and then realizing we were hungry. We’ve been back several times since - because the food is amazing!! La Capital

Look all the places we are recommending are amazing. This is ANOTHER amazing spot - delicious food, mezcal, AND dining in a multi-story indoor/outdoor space covered with a canopy of lighted trees? It is fancy honey. Look cute. Azul Historico

Listen, these are just a few food options. The city is FULL of amazing restaurants that will make YOU full. Be adventurous!

Drink

OH YOU’RE FANCY?
You want to try a trendy cocktail bar in a super sexy underground location that only lets you in by reservation? We gotchu! (But you better call now for reservations!)
Xaman Bar

Want to hang out with a few friends? Have drinks AND conversation? (and maybe some food too) Look no further!
GinGin

Hanky Panky Cocktail Bar is a one of a kind, members-only cocktail establishment dedicated to leading and setting the standard of quality service and cocktails in Mexico City’s burgeoning craft cocktail scene. As a speakeasy, Hanky-Panky cannot boast its address, but can be contacted through telephone to make a reservation. Hanky Panky Phone +52 55 9155 0958

Here’s a place that will only take groups of 2 - 6 people. Their drinks are delicious and the cocktail menus are so beautiful that the servers barely let you touch them - definitely don’t try to steal one. Baltra Bar

Do you want some late night tequila while listening to Mariachi bands? (you can even grab food here too) Check out Tenampa and make a reservation to make sure you get a seat! Tenampa

Ok. Again, these are just a few options. There are SO MANY bars and cute little whole in the wall places to grab a quick drink on the street. If you walk by something and think “hmmm that place looks great!” Just try it! And when the bartender serves you dried crickets - eat them.

Explore

Castles, Museums, and Parks; Oh my!

The large park near the La Condesa and Roma Norte neighborhoods is BEAUTIFUL and you should absolutely go for a walk in it! There will be all kinds of street food around and some great street shopping. The main attraction is the Chapultepec Castle. Entrance to that part of the park is about $4 USD and is open 9:00AM - 5PM Tuesday - Sunday. The line to get in can be long so definitely try to get there a little early unless you are fine with a small wait! The view from the top of the castle is AMAZING.

A short drive away (about 30 minutes) is the Frida Kahlo Museum. If you want to visit this location be sure to book your tickets now - you HAVE to buy them in advance and for a specific entrance time. They are very punctual and very busy!

Another great (and less hilly) park is Alameda Central. The park will make for a great stroll and has a fantastic little art mall called Dr. Mora 9 and you can swing by for some coffee and a little upscale souvenir shopping. On the other side of Alameda Central park is the National Museum of Architecture and the Palace of the Fine Arts. All around this area you are likely to find street food, street shopping, and maybe a book fair!

Finally (but not really because there is SO MUCH more you’ll find to do than is listed here), you should check out Zocalo Is basically a big square with souvenirs being sold BUT on the edge of the Square are two main points of interest. The Metropolitan Cathedral. is absolutely stunning and the sculpture and gilding work inside is gorgeous. Seriously look it up! Right next door is the second point of interest - The Templo Mayor Museum. Here you’ll find the museum AND the archaeological site of the temple.

Ok!  I lied. There is ONE more thing I’d recommend for anyone who is looking to venture about an hour outside the city I recommend the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco. You can bring some drinks/food OR just hop on a boat and wait for food boats to pull up next to you and buy some from them. This is probably a half+ day activity so plan accordingly!!
